Students
Hello, my name is Ludy and I am a graduate occupational therapy student from Bay Path College. I started my affiliation at Project CHILLD in January and it has been a phenomenal experience thus far. The staff at Project CHILLD is an absolute joy and all are extremely knowledgeable. Every occupational therapist has an area of expertise. I find it fascinating to watch the interactions and interventions with the children. Even though every therapist has a unique style, all have a common goal of achieving a “just right” challenge for the child that she is treating.
This has been a great experience and I believe every occupational therapy student should complete his or her affiliation here. To read about sensory integration dysfunction is one thing, but to see it and have hands-on with the children has been amazing for me. It is very interesting to see how many children are so deprived of any vestibular activity. It makes me wonder if the fact that some school systems are cutting back on recess and taking away the swings in the playground is negatively impacting children. Project CHILLD utilizes a variety of swings to integrate the vestibular system and also help with strengthening. Another fascinating aspect at Project CHILLD is the Dynamic Listening Program, where adults and children listen to Mozart through different auditory frequencies, which also helps to facilitate vestibular function.
The school system is a good experience for a pediatric setting, but Project CHILLD is extraordinary because it provides exposure to a variety of children at different of developmental levels. As an OT student at Project CHIILD, it is essential to spend a lot of time reading, completing assessments, working with the staff. It is necessary to have a good basis of child developmental growth and development. The best part of all is that you get to PLAY! Where else can you do that!?
